Tasmania, 6–8 days, self-drive
Tasmania sees a fraction of mainland Australia’s international visitors despite holding some of the country’s most dramatic wilderness — Cradle Mountain’s alpine trails, Freycinet’s Wineglass Bay, and Hobart’s genuinely excellent food and arts scene anchored by MONA, one of the more unusual museums anywhere in the world.
A week covers Hobart (2 days, MONA plus the Salamanca Saturday market), Freycinet National Park on the east coast (2 days, Wineglass Bay lookout is a moderate 1.5-hour return hike), and Cradle Mountain in the northwest (2 days, the Dove Lake circuit is achievable in half a day for most fitness levels).
Book well ahead for summer (December–February) — Tasmania’s small population means limited accommodation, and it fills up faster than the island’s size would suggest.
